CUSTOM LASIK - It's about the quality of your vision

Visual imperfections can affect both visual acuity (that's the 20/20 measurement) and the quality of vision. These types of imperfections are referred to as lower- and higher-order aberrations. Before Wavefront technology and Custom Lasik, only lower-order aberrations such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism could be treated (with glasses, contact or Conventional Lasik treatment). Now, with Wavefront technology and Custom Lasik, doctors have the diagnostic capabilities to measure and correct both lower- and higher-order aberrations.

Higher - order aberrations affect quality of vision. These often result in symptoms such as visual glare, and halos that cause night vision problems.

Custom Lasik has the potential to correct how much you see, and also how well you see.

Lasik Technology

For Custom Lasik, IEC uses the wavefront technology of Bausch & Lomb's Zyoptix system. The Zyoptix system maps the eye at 9,000 points, 45 times that of previous technologies, giving our doctors a three-dimensional picture of your eye. This analysis allows IEC Laser surgeons to customize the Lasik procedure for your individual visual irregularities.

Custom Lasik with Wavefront Technology can greatly improve your chances of seeing 20/20 or better and give you added benefits.

A U.S. clinical trial using the Bausch & Lomb Zyoptix system to treat myopia showed improved visual outcomes, with a very large number of patients reporting being "very satisfied" with their Wavefront guided LASIK surgery. In addition, a very high percentage of patients reported reduced complications after surgery, including improvement or no change in the areas of light sensitivity, glare and night driving difficulties.

The best way to find out how Custom Lasik could benefit you is to have a comprehensive Laser vision evaluation (Free consultation). You will have your own visual "fingerprint" with the WavePrint map.

Zyoptix /Custom Lasik not only treats the amount of correction (associated with 20/20 vision), but also the quality of your vision (how well you see). The FDA studied Zyoptix for years before it was approved in the US. Of the patients involved in the FDA trials, not a single patient was dissatisfied with the results. Worldwide over 100,000 Zyoptix procedures have been performed.

Choices. With the capabilities of our new Bausch & Lomb laser, IEC can offer patients choices in LASIK procedures, as well as options in pricing. For more information on Custom Lasik visit www.zyoptix.com.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is the Procedure Painful? The procedure itself is almost completely painless! You are awake during the entire procedure, however your eye is completely anaesthetized with drops. Your eyelid is held open with a special instrument called a speculum. While the flap is being created, you may feel some pressure on your eye.

How Quickly Can I Return to Normal Activities? We recommend that you sleep for about five hours following your procedure. Your eyes may be itchy and watery. Quick healing will occur while asleep. Most patients are able to return to work within 24 hours of their procedure. Reading can be a bit of a challenge for the first week following your procedure. There is a two to four week period in which we request that you wear goggles during showering, refrain from wearing eye make-up and stay away from very dusty, dirty environments.

What if I am a Contact Lens Wearer? All contact lenses somewhat alter the curvature of the cornea. Contact lenses must be removed prior to your initial consultation as well as before your procedure, allowing your cornea to return to its natural state. The type of lenses that you wear will determine the amount of time needed. This will be discussed with you when you book your consultation.

What is Required From Me Following My Procedure? You are required to be examined the next day after your procedure. Our surgeons require an examination at day seven (7) following Lasik. You will then be seen at one month, three month, six month and twelve-month periods. Most patient's vision is considered stable by the time of their six-month visit. Beyond this, visits are scheduled as deemed necessary by your IEC Laser Centers doctor. It is extremely important that you return to IEC for your annual checkup to assure that, through our continuing technological advances, you continue with good eye health.

Can I Have Both Eyes Treated on the Same Day? Most patients choose to have both eyes done on the same day. However, patients do have the option of having only one eye treated at a time.

Is My Night Vision Going to be Affected? In the initial 3-6 month period following your procedure it is normal to have some night glare due to the healing process. This is temporary. If you have very large pupils and the surgeon feels there may be some focus problems at dusk, this will be discussed with you at your consultation.

How Do I Get the Best Doctor? We encourage you to compare us to others in the industry. IEC's surgeon has performed over 10,000 successful procedures since November 1999.

What Type of Glasses Might I Need After the Procedure? Glasses for distance should not be required. Prior to your procedure, your surgeon will discuss the potential need for reading glasses. After your procedure, glasses should only be necessary for reading if you are beyond age 40.

What additional risks are there with Custom LASIK? Although all surgical procedures carry some risk, studies of Wavefront technology and Custom LASIK have shown better results than conventional LASIK. With this technological advancement, more people now qualify as candidates for Lasik and conventional candidates may achieve even better results with the wavefront technology.
